The Dangers of Working in the Heat
It’s no secret that working in hot or humid environments causes your body to build up heat stress. But without initiating heat illness prevention measures like taking breaks in a shaded area, wearing effective cooling PPE, and hydrating around the clock, built-up heat stress can cause a debilitating heat illness. These illnesses can look like painful, involuntary muscle spasms due to heat cramps, to seizures, physical collapse, and unconsciousness due to heat stroke, which is a medical emergency that needs to be addressed as soon as possible.
Factors That Can Cause a Heat Illness
- Humidity: Humidity can impact your body’s ability to release built-up heat via sweating. This is due to humidity preventing sweat from evaporating so your body can’t cool itself like it would be able to under normal conditions.
- Heavy Exertion: Over-exerting on the job means your body is accumulating heat internally as well as externally from environmental conditions. Together, this can overwhelm your system if proper cooling actions are not enacted.
